Noise Cancelling Earmuffs Can Help Decrease Anxiety and Reduce Hearing Loss From Loud Noises

What Are Noise Cancelling Earmuffs?

Noise cancelling earmuffs are placed around your dog’s head. They are designed to muffle loud noises, helping your dog to tolerate them better.

Do Earmuffs Work For Dogs?

Earmuffs work for dogs to diminish loud sounds to some extent. They will not totally block out loud noises, but should make the sounds more tolerable for your dog.

Why Should I Use Noise Cancelling Earmuffs For My Dog?

Instances where you may want to use noise cancelling earmuffs for your dog include:

  • Fireworks.
  • Thunderstorms.
  • In the car.
  • On airplanes.
  • A passenger on your motorcycle.
  • At the shooting range.
  • Attending a concert.
  • Grooming your dog.

These are all instances where loud noises can cause your dog to become more anxious.

Some of these situations can cause your dog to experience hearing loss as well. Noise cancelling earmuffs can also help protect your dog from hearing loss when used properly.

What Should I Look For When Choosing Noise Cancelling Earmuffs For My Dog?

A few things to keep in mind when choosing noise cancelling earmuffs for dogs:

  • Size. Measure your dog correctly to find the proper size for your dog.
  • Material. Noise cancelling earmuffs are made of plastic and foam, others are made of cotton. Determine which type would be more tolerable for your dog to wear.
  • Adjustable Straps. To ensure you get a good fit.
  • Fit. The earmuffs should seal around your dog’s ears. If they are loose in any way, it won’t provide any noise reduction. If they are too tight, it could restrict your dog’s airway.
  • Not Easily Moved. Most likely, your dog will not like wearing earmuffs, at least not at first. They will probably shake their head or paw at them to get them off. Good fitting earmuffs should not come off too easily.

How Do I Measure My Dog For Noise Cancelling Earmuffs?

To measure your dog for the proper size earmuffs, measure around the circumference of their head.

This would be the top of their head and around their chin.

Noise Cancelling Earmuffs For Dogs

Here are some options of earmuffs you may want to consider to help diminish loud noises that affect your dog. The product information is according to the manufacturer.

All of these noise cancelling earmuffs got very mixed reviews from users. The fit was an issue for a lot of users. Either they were too small and it appeared to restrict the dog’s airway, or they were too big and would fall off or not create the proper seal to reduce noise.

You may need to try different options or styles to find the proper fit for your dog.

Another option is to combine the cotton earmuffs with the plastic earmuffs to get a better fit and/or noise reduction, as long as it is not too restrictive for your dog.

If you prefer a softer option for your dog, the Happy Hoodie is for you, as it is made of cotton. This uses compression around your dog’s ears to soothe anxiety as well as reduce loud sounds. It can also be used as protection of your dog’s ears if they have a hematoma or other medical condition affecting their ears and can also provide warmth in cold weather.

The biggest con with the Happy Hoodie is the sizing. It was either too big: the dog would shake and it would fall down around their neck, or it was too small and it was too tight around the throat. So you may have to try a few different sizes to get the correct fit for your dog.
