It’s raining and your dog wants to go outside. You dread it because you know when they come back in the house, it will take forever for them to dry, not to mention that wet dog smell they will bring in with them. A dog raincoat can help protect your dog from getting wet and can reduce the wet dog smell. This post explores dog raincoats that are perfect for your large breed pup.

What Should I Look For In A Dog Raincoat?
Finding a good raincoat for your dog is important to keep them dry, especially if they like to be out in the wet weather. There are several things to be aware of when choosing a raincoat for your dog.
Length
Measure the length of your dog from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Choose a raincoat that will cover your dog.
Girth
This is the circumference around your dog’s chest. Make sure the coat you choose can secure around the girth of your dog.
Hood
Do you want a hood for your dog? Some raincoats have them and some don’t. Of those that do have a hood, they may have a drawstring for a better fit or they may not have anything at all. If there is a drawstring, will your dog try to chew it?
Closure
Most dog raincoats are secured with Velcro. Will your dog be okay with the sound of the Velcro opening and closing? If not, choose a raincoat with a different closure, like snaps or a buckle.
Leg Straps
Some dog raincoats come with straps to secure the coat to the back of your dog. This means you will have to lift your dog’s hind legs to get them on. Is this something you will be able to do with your dog? You can choose not to use the leg straps, but if you don’t, the coat may come up if it is windy or move out of place when your dog is wearing it.
Reflective Stitching
Will your dog be out at night? Reflective stitching can help your dog be visible in low light conditions.
Lining
Most dog raincoats are not lined. Choose a raincoat with lining if you also want to keep your dog warm in addition to keeping them dry.
Leash Opening
Do you use a collar or harness when walking your dog? Some raincoats are designed with an opening for a collar and some have an opening for a harness. Choose which works best for you. If your harness has a ring toward the neck of your dog, you may be able to use a raincoat with a collar opening.
Belly Coverage
If your dog likes to play in the rain, they may be prone to getting mud on their belly. Look for a raincoat with good belly coverage if this sounds like your dog. Dog raincoats are made to fit both males and females. Because of this, raincoats will fit differently under the belly for males and females due to male anatomy and may not offer as much coverage under the belly for females.
How Do I Find The Right Fit Raincoat?
To find the right fit raincoat for your dog, there are 3 measurements you will want to take.
Use a paper tape measure to take your measurements. If you don’t have a paper tape measure, you can take a piece of string and then measure the string with a regular tape measure.
- Length. To measure the length of your dog, start at the base of your dog’s neck and end at the base of the tail.
- Girth. Measure your dog’s girth, or chest circumference, by bringing the tape measure around the thickest part of your dog’s chest. This is right behind the front legs.
- Neck. Measure around the base of your dog’s neck and leave room for two fingers.
After you have gotten your measurements, compare them to the manufacturer’s. Some may use the girth as their primary measurement for the correct size and others may use the length.
Also check the neck measurement to be sure it will not be too small for your dog.
If your dog is between sizes, check the manufacturer’s recommendation if you should size up or down.
