What Is Dog Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is when there is an inflammation of the lungs and structures of the lungs. It may cause a build up of mucus and pus in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, there are several causes of pneumonia in dogs. These include viral infections, parasites, bacterial infections, fungal infections and aspiration.
Viral Infections
Infections from viruses such as distemper and canine flu can cause damage to the lungs, possibly leading to the development of pneumonia.
Parasites
Parasites, such as heartworm, can infect and damage the lung making them susceptible to developing pneumonia.
Bacterial Infections
Your dog may inhale substances that contain bacteria that cause damage to the lungs.
Fungal Infections
This occurs when your dog inhales spores from a fungus, most commonly through contaminated soil, which then damages the lungs.
Aspiration
This occurs when your dog inhales foods or liquids. This commonly occurs when dogs are improperly given liquid medications. It can also occur in dogs that are under anesthesia which can interfere with their swallowing mechanism.
What Are The Signs Of Pneumonia In Dogs?
Signs of pneumonia in dogs may include:
- Coughing.
- Difficulty breathing.
- Lethargy.
- Loss of appetite.
- Bluish mucous membranes.
- Fever.
- Weakness.
How Can I Tell If My Dog Has Pneumonia?
If your dog is exhibiting any of the symptoms above, they should be seen by their veterinarian or emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. The earlier they see a doctor the better the outlook for them.
While in the care of a veterinarian, there are a few tests that may be done to determine if your dog has pneumonia and what kind they have. Tests may include:
- Listening to your dog’s lungs. Your veterinarian will be listening for sounds the lungs are making, such as wheezing or harsh sounds.
- X-Ray. An x-ray of the lungs may be able to show if there is fluid build up.
- Culture. A culture of the lungs or any discharged fluids can reveal if there is a bacterial or fungal infection present.
- Blood work may also be done.
How Do Vets Treat Pneumonia In Dogs?
How your veterinarian treats pneumonia in your dog depends on the cause of the pneumonia. Antibiotics are usually given if the pneumonia is caused by a bacterial infection or aspiration. If it is due to a viral infection, antibiotics will not be able to help, and instead an anti fungal will be given.
Your dog may need increased oxygen to help them breathe. They may also need a nebulizer treatment, which can help to provide medication or loosen mucus in the lungs.
Your dog may need periodic chest x-rays throughout their treatment and over time to be sure the pneumonia clears and there are no complications.
Can Antibiotics Cure Pneumonia In Dogs?
Antibiotics can help to treat pneumonia in dogs if the cause is from a bacterial infection.
Once the type of pneumonia is determined, the proper treatment can be given to your dog.
Can A Dog Survive Pneumonia?
A dog can definitely survive having pneumonia. The sooner they are brought to a veterinarian and begin treatment, the better chance for a recovery.
Is Dog Pneumonia Contagious?
Depending on the type of pneumonia, it can be spread between dogs. This is especially true if the cause is a viral infection. Canine distemper and flu can be spread between dogs through inhalation of the virus. As mentioned above, the resulting infection can result in damage to the lungs, making your dog susceptible to developing pneumonia.
How Long Does It Take For Dogs To Get Over Pneumonia?
This will vary by dog. Factors that will affect how quickly your dog can get over their pneumonia can include:
- Their age.
- Underlying medical conditions.
- Immunocompromised.
- Type of pneumonia.
- How quickly they received treatment.
