Brushing your dog’s teeth is an important part of their healthcare routine, however it is something most of us don’t think to do. We admit, it is not something we ever did with any of our previous dogs, but we decided to give it a try with our current dog. We decided to try the C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Kit based on good reviews and the fact that the toothpaste is made in the USA.
What Is C.E.T Toothpaste?
C.E.T toothpaste is made by the brand Virbec. It is an enzymatic toothpaste, which means it contains ingredients that break down plaque and help to freshen breath.
It is available in multiple flavors, among them:
- Beef.
- Poultry.
- Malt.
- Seafood.
- Vanilla Mint.
The toothpaste does not foam when you brush your dog’s teeth and it is safe for them to swallow.
Oral Hygiene Kit
We decided to purchase the Virbec C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Kit. This kit contains a dual sided toothbrush (one side with a large head, the other side with a small head), a finger toothbrush (a plastic finger cover with bristles on one side), and a 2.5 oz. tube of poultry flavored enzymatic toothpaste.
If you are going to buy the kit, be advised that it is only available with the poultry flavored toothpaste.
Our dog loves poultry, so it was not an issue for us to only have the poultry option. If your dog does not like the taste of poultry or is unable to have it due to any medical issues, you will have to buy the toothbrush and toothpaste separately.
Kit Components
The dual sided toothbrush measures 9 inches with a large head on one side and a small head on the other side. This is good if you have multiple animals of different sizes whose teeth you need to brush. The large head is good for large dogs and the small head for small dogs. Some dogs just can’t tolerate a large toothbrush head, so having the small head option is great for those dogs as well.
The finger brush measures 2.3 inches with a small number of bristles on one side. This is a good option to start off with if you have never brushed your dog’s teeth before or if your dog seems a bit uncomfortable around the regular toothbrush.
The tube of toothpaste is 2.5 oz. The toothpaste does not have a harsh smell and is easy to get out of the tube.
Our Experience
Since our dog is medium in size, we opted to try the large head of the toothbrush. There is no need to wet the toothbrush before applying the toothpaste, so we put a pea sized amount of toothpaste on the bristles.
*A note about our dog. She likes to put things in her mouth she shouldn’t and is used to us having our hands by her mouth to get whatever object she has out of her mouth, especially if she won’t give it up easily. For this reason, we chose to start with the toothbrush instead of the finger brush.
Surprisingly, our dog let us brush her teeth! We weren’t sure how she would react. She seemed to really like the taste of the toothpaste and kept trying to chew at the bristles to get more of it.
That became our biggest obstacle. Each time we try to brush her teeth, we are able to brush them, albeit quickly, because she tries to eat the toothbrush. This is just something we are going to have to work on and will hopefully get better with time and practice.
Pros:
- Comes with a dual headed brush to fit mouths of various sizes.
- Has a finger toothbrush to give you another option to use to brush your dog’s teeth.
- Our dog really liked the taste of the toothpaste.
- Easy to apply the toothpaste.
- Toothpaste does not foam, so it will not cause any harm if they were to swallow any of it.
Cons:
- Toothpaste only comes in one flavor when you buy the kit.
- Can be difficult to get to all of your dog’s teeth without them trying to eat the bristles.
- Takes time for the toothpaste to work and you will not see results right away.
Verdict
Overall, we really like the C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Kit (and so does our dog)! It is easy to use and our dog really likes the flavor of the toothpaste.
After several months of using this, our veterinarian actually made a comment about how great our dog’s teeth looked.
If you are thinking about brushing your dog’s teeth, we would definitely recommend the C.E.T Oral Hygiene Kit. Just remember, it takes some time before you see results, so don’t give up!
