FurHaven Nest-Top Sofa Bed: A Review

Our Dog Laying On Her FurHaven Nest-Top Sofa Bed
Our Dog Laying On Her FurHaven Nest-Top Sofa Bed

Giving our dogs a safe, comfortable place to sleep is at the top of all pet parents’ lists. We want to give our dogs a place where they can feel relaxed and stress free. A good dog bed can provide your pup with safety, security, warmth, support, and a good night’s sleep. We decided to try the FurHaven Nest-Top Sofa Bed.

If your dog is anything like ours, they are rough on their beds. Our dog likes to dig or nest before she lays on her bed. We have gone through countless blankets, comforters, and dog beds because she ends up ripping everything with her digging behavior.

We have tried more expensive beds with memory foam and lush covers, but of course they ended up being a waste of money because she just rips them up.

FurHaven Nest-Top Dog Bed

While looking online, we came across the nest-top dog bed by FurHaven. This bed includes extra material on the top and is made especially for dogs that like to dig or nest.

The idea is that your dog will be able to dig into this extra material to get out that nesting behavior without ruining the bed.

We thought this would be perfect for our dog and thought we would give it a try.

According to the FurHaven website:

  • Available in 2 colors:
    • Gray.
    • Aqua.
  • Has different material to choose from:
    • Convoluted Orthopedic Foam (egg crate foam).
    • Solid Orthopedic Foam.
    • Memory Foam.
    • Cooling Gel.
  • Comes in 3 sizes:
    • Medium, for dogs up to 35 pounds.
    • Large, for dogs up to 55 pounds.
    • Jumbo, for dogs up to 95 pounds.
  • The cover is removable and machine washable.
  • Foam is manufactured in the USA and meets CERTIPUR-US standards.

Delivery

Upon arrival, the bed was shrink wrapped. It was easy to unwrap and our dog was very excited for it, as she somehow knew it was for her.

The Bed

Once the wrapping came off, the bed had a nice firmness with a memory foam base and a good deal of extra material on the top.

Right away our dog jumped on the bed and promptly began to dig and bite at it.

Our dog is between 50 and 60 pounds and we ordered the large size.

The memory foam was sufficient to support her weight without her sinking to the bottom of the bed.

The surrounding bolsters offered her a place to lay her head while sleeping. There is also a non-slip bottom.

At first glance we thought this would be a great bed for her.

Problems Arise

We have had this bed for a few months now. To be honest, our dog doesn’t lay on it that much. She tends to use it as stress relief to get out that nesting instinct of hers.

We have no idea why she doesn’t want to lay on it. It seems like it would be a very comfortable bed for her to sleep on.

Another issue we have come across with this bed is the endless amount of fabric that comes off this bed. It turns out that every time our dog digs at the top of the bed, pieces of fabric come off of it. Some end up all over the floor and sometimes pieces of it end up caught in her paws.

As time has gone on, the fabric on the top of the bed has literally disappeared from the bed, leaving a bare surface.

From all of the digging behavior, of course some of the stitching has come undone as well, leaving several holes where the upper fabric attaches to the base of the bed.

Pros

  • Easy to unwrap to full size.
  • Sufficient amount of memory foam for dog’s size.
  • Large amount of extra fabric on top for dog to dig at.

Cons

  • Fabric comes off as your dog digs at it, causing a mess around the house.
  • Stitching could be stronger, knowing dogs will be digging at it.

Verdict

The Furhaven bed itself is a very nice bed. It is a good size and supportive of our dog. However, the amount of loose fabric that has tracked all over the house, the balding of the top fabric, and the stitching that couldn’t hold up to our digging dog made this bed a bust for us.

If your dog is a nester but not too heavy on their beds, this Furhaven bed may be a good choice for you.

Furhaven beds in general are good beds but you will have to pay attention to your dog’s behavior to determine if this specific bed is a good match for you and your dog.
