A Harness For Large Dogs Can Help Your Dog Enjoy Their Walks More By Having A Harness That Fits Them Well And Provides Them With Support And Comfort

Taking our dog out for a walk is a great bonding experience with our pups. Some of us prefer to use a harness to walk our dogs instead of a collar. This could be due to the breed of dog you have, your dog may not tolerate a collar, or just a personal preference. If you have a dog on the larger side, finding a harness for large dogs that fits comfortably can be a challenge.

What Is A Harness For Large Dogs?

For the purpose of this post, we consider a large dog to be 50 lbs. and over.

We also looked for dog harnesses that can accommodate a large chest girth.

A harness for large dogs should also be strong enough to tolerate any kind of pulling from a large dog.

How Do You Know What Size Harness To Get For Your Dog?

When looking to buy a harness for your large dog, always measure them first.

If you have a paper measuring tape, that works best. If you do not have a paper measuring tape, you can use a piece of string and bring it around each area to be measured and then measure the length of the string.

You will want to measure the chest girth of your dog first. This is done by measuring behind your dog’s front legs, at the widest part of their chest.

Next, measure the size of your dog’s neck. This should be done at the base of your dog’s neck, where it meets their shoulders. You should also allow for two fingers to fit underneath the tape measure to give your dog some extra room here.

Once you have your measurements, check with the manufacturer to see their sizing based on your dog’s measurements. You may have to size up if your dog is between sizes.

What Is The Easiest Dog Harness To Put On?

The easiest dog harness to put on depends on your dog and their temperament. There are a few different types of harnesses:

  • Step In Harness. This type of harness requires your dog to place both of their front paws into the harness, which you then pull up and fasten.
  • Over The Head. When using this harness, the neck part of the harness goes over your dog’s head. You then bring the bottom of the harness up to your dog’s belly and secure it closed to fasteners on the back.
  • Sideways. On this type of harness, the buckles are unfastened and you bring it up to one side of your dog and then secure the neck and belly straps without having your dog step into it or have to bring it over your dog’s head.

Some dogs are not very good at lifting their paws to get into a step in harness, or they may be too excitable to stand still to do so.

Others may not like to have anything being placed over their head.

It may take some trial and error to find the best type of harness for your dog.

What Should I Look For When Choosing A Harness For My Large Dog?

When looking to get a harness for your large dog, here are some things you may want to look for:

  • Size. After measuring your dog, choose the best size according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The fit should be snug, but not tight.
  • Metal Buckles. If your dog is a puller, look for metal hardware. This will be more durable than those made from plastic.
  • Material. Your harness should be made of durable material that is strong enough to withstand the largest of dogs.
  • Reflective Stitching. This will help your dog be more visible in low light conditions.
  • Grab Handle. A grab handle is good to help your dog get over rough terrain, hold on to them in a potentially dangerous situation, or even help them into and out of the car.
  • Leash Attachment. Is your dog a puller? If so, look for a leash attachment in the front of the harness, by the chest. This will help you have more control over your dog on walks and helps to decrease pulling. A leash attachment on the back is for more leisurely walks or if you want to run or jog with your pup. These attachments should also be made of metal for greater durability.
  • Adjustable Straps. This will help you get the right fit for your dog and make them more comfortable in the harness.
  • Padding. A padded liner can help make the harness more comfortable for your dog to wear.
  • On/Off. Make sure to check the method to get the harness on and off and that your dog will be able to tolerate it.
